Now that things are going back to the “new normal,” we are all looking for ways to get back into our fitness routine. Gyms are likely one of the most popular places to start. However, there are some gym etiquette rules that everyone should know before hitting the gym.

The first rule is always to wipe down the equipment after use. This means that you should take a towel and wipe down the bench, treadmill, and any other piece of equipment you use. Not only is this courteous to other gym members, but it is also a health safety issue. Germs can spread quickly in a gym setting, so it is important to do your part to help keep things clean.

Another important rule is to be respectful of others around you. If people are waiting for equipment, make sure to take a break before your workout is finished. It can be hard to give up your favorite treadmill but think about how much more difficult it will be for someone else to wait until you get off. Also, avoid talking on the phone while in the gym if possible.

Working out at the gym can be a great way to improve your overall fitness and health, but it’s important to remember to follow some basic etiquette while you’re there. This will help ensure that everyone has a positive experience at the gym and avoids any potential conflicts.

Here are some tips on gym etiquette:

1. Be respectful of others.

This means being mindful of how much noise you make, how much space you take up, and what kinds of things you say. Remember, the gym is a shared space, so be polite and considerate of your fellow gym-goers.

2. Don’t hog the equipment.

If you’re going to be using a machine or weightlifting station for a long period, let others know this by setting a timer, keeping track of your sets and repetitions, or just saying something to those around you.

3. Put equipment back where it belongs when you’re done with it.

This means putting weights away if you used them, putting away mats or equipment that you were using, taking off your weights or yoga mats when you’re finished with them, etc.

4. Dress the part.

This doesn’t mean you have to wear Lycra and head to the gym at the peak of your fitness, but it’s generally considered polite to dress modestly and appropriately for a gym-going audience. This means no tank tops, sports bras, powerlifting shorts for men, etc.

5. Stop talking on your cell phone while working out.

This is one of the most important gym etiquette rules! If someone’s on the machine next to you and has their headphones in while watching TV, you shouldn’t be talking on the phone loudly. It’s distracting for everyone, and if it’s really important, you can take your call outside or wait until after your workout to talk.

6. Keep the bathroom clean.

Don’t leave hair in the drains, don’t forget to wipe down surfaces before you go, etc. This one’s pretty self-explanatory!

7. Don’t be a hanger-on.

If you’re not a gym member, don’t hang around outside or in the locker room. This is annoying for members and can make them feel uncomfortable.

8. Don’t be too noisy when working out.

You don’t have to be silent, but remember you are there with others. If someone is on the treadmill next to you and reading a book or watching TV, keep your noise level down.

9. Don’t leave your phone behind when working out!

This one’s for all of us — it’s easy to get distracted by our phones, but it’s very rude to leave them at the gym. If you have to use your phone while working out, keep it silent so that it doesn’t interrupt classes or other exercises.

10. Be aware of your surroundings.

This means watching where you’re going, not dropping weights on the floor, etc. Observe what is happening around you and try to be as safe as possible.

11. Wait for your turn.

If you are about to use a piece of equipment and someone is still using it, wait your turn. Don’t rush them, and don’t be pushy. If it’s a piece of equipment that’s often in high demand, like benches or resistance machines, try to limit the amount of time you spend using it so everyone can get a turn.

12. Be nice.

If someone is not following these rules, remind them kindly. No one likes to be scolded, and you’ll likely get more respect if you ask them nicely to follow the rules.
